Chardonnay is a white wine that is the most popular white wine that is consumed in the United States and Europe. This wine is developed from a grape that is grown in many locations. It is a light colored green grape the when cultivated properly can take on flavors that will dazzle you. These grapes are now grown is places like Australia, New Zealand, California, Chile and South Africa. This grape is also the base grape of most Champagnes that are processed today.

The American and French Chardonnays wine makers are rich with oak and vanilla flavors and have proved to be the most complex wines. This flavor of wine was originated in France where burgundy’s and champagnes were most popular. It was born from the white burgundy of France which used a different grape initially, but as they discovered it could not be prepared with the Aligote grape alone, it needed the think skinned green Chardonnay grape to make it complete.

Chardonnay grapes are prepared in a way that is creates the oak and vanilla flavors by fermenting in oak barrels. Fortunately for chardonnay lovers, it does not have to ferment as long as it’s red wine counterparts. Unlike red wines, Chardonnay should be served chilled and enhances foods such as chicken, fish butter and cheeses primarily because it is less acidic.

The processes in which this wine is made can alter the taste dramatically. American wineries will ferment their chardonnay without the added oak. This will produce a softer wine that will have a different flavor. When it is aged with the oak added the end result will have the smoky, vanilla scent and the flavor of caramels and butter. These special grapes are used for chardonnays are also the grapes used for champagne and sparkling wines.

The grapes used to produce this wile is now ranked eighth in the world; cultivating an estimated 140,000 hectares (which is a form of European measurement). These vineyards spans among Italy, Australia, France and America. It is the most popular and therefore, the most consumed white wine today.

A very favorite type of red grape is called Cabernet Sauvignon. This red grape is wildly used for the production of wine all across the world. This wine is at the top of most wine list along with the wonderful Chardonnay. Chardonnay is composed from a green skinned grape species. In most regions of the world that produce wine, the Cabernet Sauvignon is widely cultivated despite the lengthy time needed for the grapes to ripen properly. The major shortcoming is the very low yield of this particular grape.

The skins of the berries of the Cabernet Sauvignon are very tough allowing a shield to prevent different diseases and protection from harsh autumn rains or wastage. It is no wonder that the Cabernet Sauvignon is so widely popular around the world, due to the excellent aroma and particular properties.

Semi-arid regions are the best places to grow Cabernet Sauvignon because this region is very accommodating for the lengthy grown season needed. With well drained and fertile soils with a moderately warm climate, it is the spot to be. Some examples of area which produce this lovely wine are areas such as Sonoma County’s Alexander Valley or Napa Valley as well as Central Coast areas like the Paso Robles. All of these areas are well known for the enticing wine products they produce.

Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the Vitis vinifera species and is similar to other imperial wine grapes of this category. The berry itself is one genetic scientist enjoy because it is a cross between the Cabernet Franc and the Sauvignon Blanc.

Just about every bottle of Bordeaux wine includes these wonderful Cabernet Sauvignon berries. They are also used to make a wine highly considered as one of the greatest red wines in the world. Which is it? It is the beloved Red Bordeaux.

In the early 1960’s, Cabernet Sauvignon raced up to the top of the red wine chart as America’s most popular wine. It landed first place with its burgundy and still tops the charts amongst American wine lovers.
The thick skin on the Cabernet Sauvignon grape brings a result that brings high tannin in wine. This allows the wine some age ability and structure. It is said that this wine lacks a mild palate of richness thus making it “pulpy” in taste. Other wines with such taste include Merlots and Shiraz or perhaps the Syrah that could be most commonly found in Australia.

There are a wide range of flavors and aromas that are associated with Cabernet Sauvignon. The aim is to collect the floral aspect when it is not totally ripe with capsicum. When it does ripen it is subject to the flavors of blackcurrant. You will find the flavors of min or eucalyptus in Chilean cabernet and California wines. It brings a nice aroma to the wine accompanied by the wonderful taste. It was characterized with black current, violets and spice smells in the old wines. The new world wines there are flavors that include ripe jam-like berries, chocolate and oaks are found in addition to these old flavors. The cabernet Sauvignion fills the mouth with richness but still hold a bit of acidity. As a result, you get the best of both flavors. So, grab a bottle and enjoy!

The health benefits of consuming alcohol cannot be ignored. However, not all alcoholic beverages are good for you. Compared with beer and spirits, wine provides more benefits to your health.

Wine has vitamins and minerals. In addition, wine has antioxidants, which makes the blood less likely to clot.

We all know what wine is and where it comes from. But what are spirits? Generally speaking, spirits are extracted or purified alcohol. They are produced through a process called distillation in which heat is applied to a fermented liquid. Once heated, the liquid changes to a gas, and then is squeezed back into liquefied form.

Spirits can be made from any organic material that can be “fermented.” It is possible for a wine could become a spirit by simply increasing the amount of alcohol.

Measurements

Both wines and spirits are distilled from organic substances, which give the drink its alcohol. These beverages are classified by their alcohol content. Most nations that produce and sell spirits use a recognized means of measurement. The most common form of measuring a spirit’s alcohol content is to use ABV (alcohol by volume).

For example, if a spirit has 40 percent alcohol it will be classified as 40 percent ABV. In the US, all alcoholic beverages are classified in accordance to alcohol content by using “proof of scale.” The “proof” of an alcoholic beverage, is simply their ABV doubled. So, if a spirit has a 20% ABV, it is classified as 40 proof.

Classifications

Spirits are generally grouped according to the kind of fermenting material that is used in for distillation.

Below is a short list and brief descriptions of some of the more popular groups of spirits.

1. Brandy

Brandy is a spirit that is produced from “fermented” grape sap. It derives its alcohol content from the distillation of grape juices, often from wines.

2. Gin, Vodka, etc.

These spirits are produced from distilled beers that are made from grains.

3. “Fortified wines”

These are spirits that are made by combining fermented wine and extracted spirits, usually brandy.

These are only a few of the many groups of spirits. And, while different organic materials are used for fermentation, all must be distilled to make alcohol.

Experts have known for some time now that that wine is chock full of vitamins, minerals, and natural sugars that are often good for you. Wine is also a good source of potassium and is low in sodium. Red wines in particular have lots of Vitamin B which comes from the grape skins.

Nope, I said it right. Ice coffee we may have heard of but, ice wine? Ice wine is a wine that is produced under certain types of weather conditions and is a very rare form of wine. This type of wine is produced where the conditions right for the wine. Where is that place? How about the Pacific Northwest?

Believe it or not ice wine is not made is large quantities. With the lack of availability in fine wines and the need for only fine wines, this makes large amounts difficult to make. The end result is a wine so very rare that only a lucky few are actually able to purchase the wine. As you can imagine with something so scarce, it is extremely expensive to get your hands on. Well for the majority of us anyway who are not in the habit of having hundreds of thousands just lying around.

Ice wine is something so rare that many of us want it. We all seem to want what we can’t have right? It isn’t just that there is a need the rarest of materials. Oh no, we couldn’t stop there. The weather conditions are of the utmost concern and are crucial when making such a rare wine. Once that golden time arrives, wine makers show their stuff and get to work preparing this one of a kind priceless wine.

How does someone make such a priceless wine? You just need to have the basics like any other fine wine maker. All you need is fully ripened grapes and a temperature of around 5 degrees C. That shouldn’t be a problem right? The wine making process itself takes several days and the temperature needs to remain this low to ensure quality grapes. See, the grapes held in these conditions are frozen naturally and are then hand plucked by the wine makers and their assistants.

It takes full vine of grapes to make a bottle of ice wine. The grapes themselves need to be gently pressed making sure only the running juice is collected. With such low temperatures, what you are collecting is actually frozen water crystals. These crystals are fermented with sugars and particles that the free running juices produce. This is how the wonderful but very rare ice wine is created.

Good luck trying to sample this fine wine. You’re not going to be able to find this rare bread of alcohol at your local wine store. You won’t have much luck on the internet either unless you just happened to catch it at the right time. Once you go through the trouble of finding it, how will you possibly pay for it? A single bottle easily cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

A better alternative to going broke is to find the right wine maker within the Pacific Northwest region. The bottles go extremely fast once made but, you may be able to snag some the wine maker has on hand. You’re still going to spend quite a bit for your sample, but a little taste is all you need to savor this one of a kind ice wine.

The right wine can compliment your dinner perfectly; but if you choose the wrong wine it could be a disaster. So how do you choose the right wine to compliment what you have ordered to eat in a restaurant? Never mind the restaurant, what about when you’re at home; you make a nice dinner and want the perfect wine to compliment what you’ve cooked. Picture yourself standing in the liquor store surrounded by hundreds of bottles, whites and reds, naturally sparkling, rose, and Rieslings. Should it be dry or semi-dry; should it by fruity or smoky. The world of wine has really developed into an industry of taste and culture.

The right choice is a little easier in a restaurant. You wait staff should be able to recommend a wine that will compliment what you’ve chosen for dinner. If your wait staff is not savvy in the art of choosing, then the bartender should have more confidence, and have the basic skills of choosing wines. The upscale restaurants will make recommendations without you asking about which wine to choose; and sometimes a recommended wine is printed on the menu with the dish you have chosen. If you do find yourself alone you can choose something that you are familiar with or use the old standard of ordering. White wines are ordered with white meats and white sauces, red wines for red meats and red sauces. The most popular is Chardonnay for whites and Cabernet Sauvignon for a red.

When ordering a wine in a restaurant it is usually more economical to purchase wine by the bottle rather than by the glass. It is usually easy to find a restaurant that offers dinner specials, perhaps dinner for two with a bottle of wine for a fixed price. If you are home and want to have wine with your dinner or need wine as an ingredient; you will probably have better luck getting advice if you go to a store that has a vast array of choices. Just remember the rule of thumb when cooking with wine. You don’t cook with the expensive wines; a cheap bottle of wine is fine to cook with as long as it has the flavor you are looking for. If you want a smoky flavor or a fruity flavor, use the cheap wine, the alcohol burns off and just leaves the flavor; use the good wine to drink with your dinner.

Of Course, when examining the prices of wines, you could be shocked as some of the prices. If money is not an issue, you’re in luck, but if you budget your money, like most people, you can get decent wines as reasonable prices. Just a few tips about keeping your wines fresh; keep the bottle on its side and rotate it, the cork should never dry out, keep them in a dry space out of direct sunlight and enjoy them before their third birthday.

It isn’t necessary to age wine over long periods of time any longer, so there’s no need to get the back hoe into the basement to renovate for that perfect wine cellar. Most stores can recommend wineries to visit, so you can do a little taste testing. If there are no vineyards near you, the stores that specialize in wines will often host wine tasting events. You should go to them, get a taste for what you like, then making choices later on in restaurants and at home will be much easier and less stressful.

Attending a wine tasting is a good way to sample many different kinds of wines. It is also a great opportunity to speak with expert winemakers and sommeliers and have them explain to you some of the basics of wine making and tasting. By the evening’ end you will have undoubtedly encountered a slew of interesting people and discovered which kinds of wines you like best.

At a wine tasting, you taste the wine with a group of people, which provides you the perfect chance to share and exchange ideas with other wine lovers. Some of these guests may be experienced wine tasters, while others may be tyros. So you will always have someone to learn from or instruct.

Wine tastings can be found in many places around the country. They are often held in fun and interesting locations like museums, art galleries or other heritage buildings. Oftentimes the producers of the wines will be in attendance, as well as other wine experts, to answer questions or to give advice.

In addition to the wine, it is not uncommon for caviar, pâté and other assorted hors d’ oeuvres to be served at most wine tasting. This makes for a wonderful one of a kind evening full of great new tastes and experiences, and maybe even a few new favorite wines.

Not only are wine tastings a perfect way to find new wines, they are also a great way to meet and talk with other wine lovers. Who knows, by the end of the night you may have made a new friend or two.

Most wine tastings last for only a couple of hours. Still, you should always remember to pace yourself. You don’t want to drink too much too quickly, because you might end up mixing wines and buying something you don’t like. You might also wake up in the morning with a terrible headache. So go slow.

Wine tastings are held all over the country, from California to New York. You should have no problem finding one.

Besides wine tastings, some companies host what are called wine dinners, where guests have the opportunity to taste many kinds of wine while they enjoy a fine meal.

Traditionally, wine tastings come in a couple of different formats. Some are more formal affairs with fewer guests and a smaller number of wines. Others are held in less formal setting where guests have access to a much larger variety of wines.

If you would like to attend a wine tasting, you can easily check online for events in your area.

Wine is available to us in mass quantities that are both delicious and inexpensive. The general rules that use you apply to drinking wine are no longer. The discovery of wine will take you to a heady land rich and wonderful in blends. You have the ever so gentle Merlot from South Africa to the “Blood of the Bull” which is a peppery Sanger de Toro from Spain.

Because of all these choices, many still feel lost in the world of wine. Where does one begin? One of the biggest questions that come up is “What red wine goes with what meal and how do I enjoy it properly?” We are going to look further into some basic tips for maximizing your experiences with red wines.

As a beginner, you are going to be flooded with different brands and varieties. Until you really have time and figure out what your likes and dislikes are, don’t’ spend too much at first. You will find that there are some great wines suitable to your tastes that range between $5 and $8 a bottle. Of course there are more expensive bottles out there but, for now, there is no need to spend $20 or $30 just exploring. Isn’t’ it better to invest your money in something you know you like?

Unless you live in Napa Valley itself, don’t settle for local brands just yet. Local wine stores stocked with local bottles of wine can be a bit of a mystery. You either get something wonderful or something that taste vinegar. For now, choose wines that are internationally and nationally distributed for a better selection.

To start, pick a wine that is mostly made from one type of grape such as Shiraz, Syrah, Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon. By doing this, you will learn more about the flavors of varietal grapes. Then you will better able to understand what you like or dislike about this blend. Even though blended reds can be quite delicious, try to avoid them for now. Also by avoiding flavored wines or coolers, you could end up with a nasty headache. This is because they are really nothing more than non-bubbly soda pop with alcohol and the least pure of ingredients.

New Zealand, Chile, Australia and South Africa make a nice Merlot and is a good place to start. The vineyards at these locations are usually able to nicely balance cost and quality. A Merlot is recommended because it is gentle and complements well with many menu choices.
Let bottles of red win sit open for ten minutes or so. Red wines like to breathe and this will make all the flavors have a chance to surface for you. Oxygen gets at the wine and it matures more quickly than just popping the cork and guzzling it down. When you leave a poured glass of wine alone for ten to twenty minutes, much of the flavor is enhanced and you will thus get a chance to truly enjoy this wine.

A good rule of thumb is that “Whites are to be chilled while reds rest at room “. It doesn’t apply in all situations but is still a good guideline rule. When you chill a red wine it essentially looses most of the flavor and well, you end up wasting your money. So, keep reds at room temperature to avoid this.

It used to be said that “Red wines are to go with red meat or pasta while white wine was joined only with fish or poultry”. That is simply not the case anymore. These are still the guidelines but, you won’t be kicked out of the restaurant if you decide another way. So, what goes with a Merlot? Anything with garlic! Spaghetti always sits easily next to a Merlot. Other choices include fried chicken or a pork chop because Merlots are a lovely, non-pretentious start to your meal.

So when Friday date night hits, try a glass of Merlot with your meal. Take note in the difference it makes the meal itself taste. Once you feel like you’ve sampled a fair number of Merlots, you should then and only then take your journey to wines made north of the equator. You could start all over with a starter wine such as Cabernet Sauvignon. Hold off on the Petite Syrah or Beaujolais until you have tasted and have a basic appreciation for both the Merlots and Cabernets. After you feel confident, then you are free to explore and discover deeper red wines. You have favorites in no time and will soon be the one making the wine suggestions at the next dinner party!
